How to Repaint Plastic Motorbike Parts

Keeping motorbike parts looking fresh is a great way of maintaining your bike so it lasts longer. Whether you are looking for motorbikes for sale to restore or you just want a change in colour, you can repaint plastic parts fairly simply. This is a different process to painting metal parts due to the differences in surface. To make sure your motorbike looks its best, read on for tips.

Remove paint that is failing either by sanding it off, or with paint stripper for use on plastic. Block sand paint that is not failing with 120-grit sandpaper.

Use a primer with flex agent in it to spray the parts when all the old paint has been removed. This allows the plastic to move without the paint cracking.

With an automotive paint gun, spray a guide coat on the parts. Allow this to dry then sand it with 320-grit sandpaper. Now spray again with a guide coat and leave to dry. With 600-grit sandpaper, dry sand the parts. Apply a wax and grease remover so that the panels are cleaned and ready to be painted on.

To make sure everything is working how it should, test the paint and paint gun on a small part. Spray a light tack coat on your plastic parts when you are satisfied with the result

Spray them with 2 or 3 medium wet coats and make sure you leave the paint to flash between each coat. This means leaving it until it is not wet but is still sticky because the reducer has evaporated. Depending on your painting conditions, the time this takes will depend. It could take a matter of a few minutes if you are out in the hot sun. However, painting in a garage on a winter's day will take longer.
